21st Century Skills

In PE we spend a lot of time collaborating.  Most of our activities involve partner or group/teamwork.  Without realizing it, we are heading in the right direction in preparing our students for the 21st Century.  This week I have been exploring the Partnership for 21st Century Skills website.  I think the basic goal of preparing our students for the 21st Century is to teach them correct principles and let them govern themselves with guidance.  As a part of the Framework for 21st Century Learning, Mr. Kay and the other team members have a vision for students to learn the essential skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration. I do agree with the authors that blending skills is necessary for the 21st Century learner and this site has a vast amount of information and resources to help us move in that direction. I just love the resource page which provides ideas for educators, policy makers, parents, and community members along with videos and overview materials.   It is fairly easy to navigate, however there is so much information that you can easily move to a different page and “get lost” there.  I found this site informative and interesting and one that I could spend hours absorbing information from.  I look forward to using some of the techniques and ideas in my own classroom.  Take a look at the website and let me know what you think.

  1. I thought this website was full of useful information, and loved the fact that it was easy to navigate. With the site being easy to navigate, even the less tech savy educators will be able to access the site with ease. I plan on going back to the site, and read more, especially about the maps.

It is so important to teach the students the skills that they need to be successful in life. One skill I noticed that is really lacking is critical thinking. A lot of the students just can't think for themselves, and I love the fact that this website encouraged critical thinking skills.

  2. I too enjoyed “getting lost” in this website. It is full of such rich information! I can see how many of the 21st Century skills would be used in the physical education classroom effortlessly. I know in past posts you said that you use a blog for your classes; are there any other types of technology you integrate into your classroom?

  3. Tori,
We actually plan to use the blog to showcase student work. We have done lessons where we have the students use iPads to video gymnastics routines to be used for assessment. We are also planning to have our students participate in a SKYPE competition with other schools. We don't have a Smartboard in our gym, but I know other PE teachers in our district who have one and actually use it for lessons.

  4. I like how you included collaboration and blending skills in your evaluation of the website. I think it is great that you already implement these skills into your everyday teaching.

I also feel the organization of the site was good...but was a little overwhelming with all the information available. I feel like this will be a valuable resource to come back to in the future.
