Blogging in Physical Education

Between two PE teachers, we see all 980 K5-fifth grade students in our school over the period of one week. It is more beneficial to use our blog to showcase student work such as photos of certain skills and activities.  Our school utilizes Edmodo.com as an educational networking site for students and teachers to communicate and collaborate.  This is where it would be more beneficial for our PE students to interact with one another about content. They actually have some really great conversations about activities, games, and skills that we are learning. However, our class blog will showcase work so that parents, students, and classroom teachers can see what is happening in PE.  Our computer lab instructors can give the students an opportunity to view the blog and make comments.  We would definitely consult some of our students to determine what types of content they would like to see on our blog and may be even give a select group of students access to assist in managing the blog.

  1. I think having a blog to showcase a students skills and activities for PE, is a wonderful idea. It will give the parents and other teachers an idea of what the students are learning and doing in PE. I know there are some teachers out there, as there are a few where I was at, that didn't think PE was important. They thought it was a waste of time, and that the students could be doing something more important like math. This blog could show that PE is just as important as the other subjects in school. I for one loved taking PE classes, it was fun and it was a way for me to get a break from the other subjects and let off some steam.

I also like how the students would be consulted about what kind of content will go on the blog. I personally think that would make a lot of students feel better about having their pictures on the blog and it is a great way to get the students involved in the blog. Only thing that I can see that would perhaps be a challenge is having the some of the students manage the blog. Some of those students might not want to put certain content the blog or the blog might not get updated as often, as those students were goofing off instead. A way to overcome that challenge is make sure all of those who are in charge of managing the blog understand how important it is to update the blog and to showcase all content that was approved for it.

  2. I really like the idea of asking your students what they would like to see on the blog. You could also consider posting short video clips of students doing certain activities each week. This would give parents a visual representation of the skills you are working on. One challenge that I could see would be getting students to visit the blog if they are already using Edmodo. I do think if you decide that the purpose of Edmodo would be discussion of content and the blog would be a place to showcase your work and activities that would be very helpful. Good luck!
