Carrying Out My GAME Plan

Last week I posted a GAME plan to strengthen my confidence and proficiency in technology standard indicator 2b. developing technology rich learning environments for my students and 3b. collaborating with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.  Now, the next step of reviewing the GAME plan and asking questions such as:

*What resources are needed to carry out the plan (media segments, reading, experts, or colleagues)?

*What additional information is needed?

*What steps have been taken so far?

The resources needed to carry out my GAME plan for indicator 2b consist of access to Fitstatsweb.com and Google Docs through class set of iPads checked out from the Learning Commons and laptops in the computer lab. The resources needed for the actual fitness assessment include stopwatches, pull-up bar, sit and reach box. The resources needed for indicator 3b are laptop with Google Plus account, Google Docs, and Google Drive.  I will also access the Volunteerspot website using a laptop or iPad.  Publisher will be another resource accessed through the computer lab or regular classroom laptops.

The additional information needed at this time for both goals is to access the computer lab schedule, determine the amount of time needed, and sign up.  I will also need to collaborate with classroom teachers and computer lab instructors to find out if the students have already been instructed on how to use Microsoft Publisher.  If they have not, I will need to find out if that is a task that the computer lab instructors can carry out or if I need to schedule a time to do so in the computer lab.

The steps that I have taken so far:

*Completion of first round of fitness assessments.

*Setting up class rosters on the Fitstats website.

*Signing up for Volunteerspot account.

*Signed up for Google Plus account and requesting and accepting colleagues as friends.

  1. Hi Lynn,
It sounds like you have been very active in addressing the indicators that you have chosen. I like your idea of having your students help to organize volunteers and to design certificates. I am sure that it will be very meaningful to them as a celebration of an accomplishment while learning a new technology skill. You also mention Fitstats as a tool for recording and tracking fitness statistics. I am not familiar with Fitstats, but I did check out their website. Is this a program where your students will enter their data or will it mostly be for you and your colleagues? I see that you can generate reports and surveys, that can help to provide and demonstrate some useful information. Thank you for sharing this site.

    1. Kat,
Our Fitstats program is maintained by our district PE representative. She has exported all of our class rosters into the program. My colleague and I will input the fitness scores that will be used for the fitness assessment. We have to send a fitness assessment home with all fifth graders. So, to not compromise the integrity of the program, we input the scores. We have not utilized the individual student tracking tool in the past, but will use it this year. We completed the first round of fitness assessments and are starting on the second round. Our goal for our students is for them to improve in three out of the five fitness categories. They can choose which three, track exercise that helps them improve, and keep up with improvements. A site that we also have our student’s use which is more helpful with suggestions of types of exercises as well as nutrition is presidentschallenge.org. Thanks for your comments.

  2. You are on a roll I see!!! Though being a P.E teacher you have developed technology rich learning environments for your students. You have found numerous ways to integrate technology in your class. While using Fitstats will you be tracking everyone's stats, will you have a designated person or volunteer to do it. Or well you have the students track their own progress while using iPads? I searched the web for Volunteerspot, it appears to be a very useful tool. Just reading the name and actually looking at the features the app had to offer this tools appears to be awesome. I think I want to introduce this app to my colleagues, the reminder section could be a win win solution instead of sending out papers, emails, and robocalls. Thank you for sharing!!!!!

  3. Narlishwa,
My colleague and I will input the fitness assessment scores into the Fitstats program, but will also allow the students to track their progress. As I replied to Kat, our goal for them is to improve in three out of the five assessment categories. They will track their exercise and keep up with ways to improve. Of course, we devote a portion of our class to strengthening and cardio each time they come to PE as well as leave time for our unit activity. We are “on go” as soon as they step foot in the gym. Volunteerspot is a great online tool. One of our teachers who is also on the PTO board uses this website for volunteers for movie night, bingo night, math night at a local grocery store, etc. She suggested that we use it for Field Day. I have set up the event and will send an email to the classroom teachers so they can email their parents with the link to sign up to help with Field Day stations. The parents who do not have computer access will still sign up by sending the form back in. I think it has been a great tool for functions that need a number of volunteers. It would be a good suggestion for your colleagues. Thanks for your comments!

  4. Wow, you are on a roll. What grade do you teach? I wish more PE teachers could see the benefits of including technology into their lesson plans. I know for my school it would cut down on behavior problems if they would implement some type of technology. I have never heard of Fitstats. I am going to look into it for our PE department. I hope that it is something that would be beneficial to our PE department.
